Ask GN 8: HDD Orientation, Long Life GPUs, & Overclocking

Posted on October 21, 2015

This installment of Ask GN – our eighth episode – sees the rise of questions relating to PC build choices, hard drive orientation (vertical vs. horizontal), long-life GPUs, and motherboard impact on overclocking.

As with the previous episodes, we feel as if the questions improve in their discussion points and level of interest each time – please keep posting them in the YouTube comments and through Twitter!

The latest episode is below:

0:29 – Dinxsy: “I have a short question: Is there any risk to having HDDs placed in a vertical position? Any known issues of skips/failures in reading data you have come across?”

4:53 – letsgoiowa: “On the topic of degradation, ho wwell do older graphics cards hold up over time? Have you noticed any particular trends one way or another with a certain model? I think of the long lifespan of the GTX 8800 and AMD's 7970, while the 580 seems left by the wayside in comparison. What traits lead to a long GPU service life?”

10:19 – Homer Thompson: “Steve, can a budget motherboard (e.g. H81) limit GPU overclocking versus what a pairing with a higher-end board (e.g. Z97) with cleaner power delivery might be capable of? I just wonder since the GPU can pull 75W through the PCIE slot. I love the channel and the site.”

13:10 – il2xbox: “Hey Steve. I have a question about improving airflow and reducing noise in my system [...]”

18:01 – Street Guru: “Given about $600 for a new gaming PC... would you suggest an 860K & R9 390 or an i5-4460 & R9 380?”
