AMD Releases First Official Driver Update Since December

Posted on July 8, 2015

Over 6 months ago, AMD released their Omega drivers with much fanfare. You can see our coverage of it here, along with some VSR vs. DSR benchmarks. The Omega drivers included new features, bugfixes, and optimizations.

That was a while ago. Since then, AMD hasn’t released a WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certified driver. Instead, for over six months, AMD has released beta drivers, and those have been limited to just major game releases (GTA, Witcher 3). As of today, AMD has finally released their 15.7 drivers, which are WHQL certified.

AMD’s newest drivers bring a number of long-awaited features to AMD GPUs. First up is Virtual Super Resolution (VSR) support. While this has already been supported by some AMD GPUs, VSR has been lacking from the 7xxx series onward, something that was promised half a year ago.

Other updates include Crossfire-supported FreeSync for applications using DirectX 10 or higher. There are also a number of Crossfire profile improvements for many games, including (but not limited to) Far Cry 4, Project CARS, Assassin's Creed Unity, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and GTA V.

AMD has also extended Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) to 7xxx series and up, allowing users to set a maximum frame rate when running an application in fullscreen.

In anticipation for the release of Windows 10 on July 29th, AMD’s 15.7 drivers now have full WDDM 2.0 support for Windows 10 and DirectX 12 for all 7xxx series GPUs and later.

The download for AMD’s 15.7 WHQL drivers can be found here, just be sure to select the driver for your operating system.
