My ASRock X79 Extreme 6 went haywire on me - well that was my guess anyway. CPU (i7 3930k) seemed OK (no visible bent pins). I couldn't find a replacement (in Australia) but came across a P9X79 Pro from a local shop - with limited warranty and missing extras. I replaced the old mobo - Yay! everything worked again.

But what I didn't figure was the menacing hand dealt from Microsoft  . I went from Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 10 Home 64 with the free upgrade offer that was in my face all last year. I expected to be able to re-activate Windows 10 using my Windows 7 Product Key. It wouldn't work so I called Microsoft for some Tech help.
The first tech couldn't help because when you can't reactivate W10, it shuts you down eg mouse/usb drivers shut off and not fixable. The first guy couldn't do a R click to run as administrator so he pass me on - to the Philippines this time. I again explained what had happened. He said "When you change your motherboard, you need to buy a new Product Key'! From MS in Australia, that's $179aud.
I haven't given up yet. But I did notice that my copy of Office now also needs re-activation. And I've come across info that it is possible to recover the Product Key from the Register. But my guess is that it would still be my W7 Key.

Any ideas?

eBay sells W10 Product Keys cheaper eg $140aud for keys for W10 and Office.

But I'm also thinking of further down the track when I want to upgrade (to Ryzen maybe). And for anyone else thinking of doing the same. You need to allocate more cash to donate to the save MS fund.

Want your product keys?

Try produkey - www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-f...product-key-3632749/

This still wouldn't give me windows 10 activation. Next I'm trying to install the windows iso via usb using my now known Product Key.

Update -

Before I got around to doing a fresh install of Windows 10 (Home, 64 bit, English), I got a call from Microsoft - a supervisor in the Philippines (g'day Raffy). He said MS provide 1 free activation (the other guys wasn't quite right) and he did so.
BUT - I still had problems - mouse wouldn't work still and keyboard wasn't working 100% eg couldn't get to Device Manager to check drivers. So I did a RESET (re-install).

After that I lost a heap of apps, but the Win key now showed me the context screen where I could get to Device Manager - which showed some usb controllers not working. So I downloaded the Intel driver updater for C600/X79 chipset from the missus' laptop to usb stick. Moved it to my PC, unzipped it and ran it. Went back to Device Manager and everything looks fine. Rebooted and got the mouse to work - yeehaa! Now I'm going through the drudgery of reinstalling apps that were on my OS drive. So now looking good.

But If I want Ryzen next year, I'll have to pay for a new Product Key. And if another motherboard breaks down, another payment! And on top of this, my Office programs have now used up their number of re-activations and will need a re-do (go back to old 2003?). Maybe also go back to W7 - most new mobos have drivers for W7. There's also still a chance that you can again upgrade from W7 to W10.

" There's also still a chance that you can again upgrade from W7 to W10."
or is there?

Looks like W7 will be supported till 2020 - au.pcmag.com/operating-systems-and-platf...today-but-dont-panic
But now it looks like they won't support W7 for newer CPUs - www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2016/...upport/#1286023278e1
"This means that if you upgrade to Intel's next generation processors due in the next six months, code named 'Kaby Lake', or indeed AMD's Bristol Ridge or Qualcomm's 8996-based silicon, only Windows 10 will be supported in terms of receiving updates."

People have had problems already - www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/63lcxj/any...indows_7_with_ryzen/ - and found solutions - yeehaa!

$20 Product Keys (OEM) from Kinguin - www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXTqz3Fd28M - which is what I ended up doing. Much better than getting a retail key that will only last you for one upgrade (unlike W7 which WAS for life).

Actually, now I am still using window 7 because I feel it is easy to use and it is also lighter than Window 10.

W7 will be fine till you want to have a PC with a CPU in it that has been released in 2017 or later.

Another way of activating W10 - using Microsoft Toolkit - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co3j4Cl7aF4
No $ required.
