Most Played PC Games, August 2014 – F2P MMOs Make a Run at the Market
Posted on September 16, 2014
Raptr has just posted its Most Played PC Games for August 2014, a month that welcomed 3 MOBAs into the top-5 for the first time.
The monthly top dog, League of Legends, hosted its LCS playoffs last month, helping increase its Share by 2.82 percent over July. "Share" represents gameplay time as a percentage of the total time spent on all the PC games played by Raptr members.
A 50 percent Mists of Pandaria price drop helped propel World of WarCraft over DOTA 2 for #2. Valve’s MOBA dropped a spot after enjoying a surge in playtime last month – resulting from The International tournament.
MOBA Smite continued to rise, jumping five spots to #5. Last month the game surged 14 spots, the furthest of any top-20 game, with the help of Raptr’s Rewards Store.
A trio of MMOs climb several spots as well. Guild Wars 2 (#12), World of Tanks (#13), and Star Wars: The Old Republic (#14) rose at least five spots in their unique ways.
Guild Wars 2 made the most of its assets, celebrating its two-year birthday with a 50 percent off sale. World of Tanks turned heads by going the competitive route with its WGNLA Season 4 Finals. Fans of The Old Republic had incentive to stick with the MMORPG with early access to the Galactic Stronghold expansion.
Two nearly forgotten free-to-play FPS games came out of nowhere to round out the top 20. Firefall (#20) rose 40 spots while the five-year-old Crossfire (#19) put on a sale, helping it climb 37 spots.
The only games to drop from the list were Payday 2 and WildStar.
