Indie Space RPG "Drox Operative" Expands

Posted on January 13, 2012

I've been following Drox Operative, developed by the makers of Din's Curse, since its initial secretive tweets and earliest features announcement from developer Soldak. The last decade has been slow and unimaginative for the X4 (expand, explore, exploit, exterminate) and space genres aside from the immersive X2 and X3 series, EVE also comes to mind, although it's more of a meat-grinder than a true space exploration game.

Thankfully, it's often the indie developers that inject a drop of innovation into an otherwise stagnating genre; it's too easy for the few large developers to get lazy and fall back on old engines, designs, and pipelines -- indie developers can't get away with that, they need to be original.

Drox Operative, as detailed in the above-linked post, has recently added two new races to their universe, yielding a total of six currently-existing races for the action RPG (in space!). Let's take a look at who they are:

Hive

Assigned a "danger level" of "moderate," Soldak has stylized these Emperor Zurg-like ships to be representative of an "insectoid hive civilization" that works, for all intents and purposes, as the Borg would.

Utopian

Also of a moderate danger level, the Utopian race hails pure logic as the end-all, be-all; originally developed as self-aware artificial intelligence, these robots have self-replicated and are becoming a larger threat in the greater scheme of things, from what I understand.
