Dragon Age Devs Go Yeti

By Published December 01, 2009 at 11:32 pm

BioWare released a free Facebook game today, dubbed Gift of the Yeti. Yetis are of high demand in the web-based gaming world, and following up with a once-was Linux trend, BioWare pushed their free content to Facebook to receive a wider audience. The game is meant to fuel holiday spirit, granted, gamers' perception of holiday spirit often involves rampages and demolition.

The game is 3D and simple: Santa has fallen ill, and as such has drafted a Yeti (you) to give out the presents this year. Stomp from one house to the next, obliterating doors and entries so that you can toss the presents inside. Police eventually notice your destructive wake, adding a chase element to the game.

Gift of the Yeti requires a 3MB download, and is available for free now via Facebook.

Final Day of Steam Sales

By Published November 30, 2009 at 10:49 am

Steam's been keeping gamers hoppin' by selling critically acclaimed titles at large discount since late last week. Monday marks the fifth and final day in their 'Five-Day-Long, One Day Only' sale, and wow is it disappointing. Find out the games on sale below:

Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition - $2.49 (75%)
Mirror's Edge - %5.00 (75%)
Section 8 - $24.99 (50%)
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - $9.99 (50%)
Dawn of Discovery - $34.99 (30%)
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood - $20.99 (30%)
Quantz - $2.00 (80%)
Evil Genius - $2.49 (75%)

In the very least, there are a few good indie games up there and of course Monkey Island. I urge you to stay away from Section 8 though, worst $50 I ever spent.

Steam Strikes Again

By Published November 29, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Steam's at it again with their holiday sales, and this time they have some decent games up.  From time of posting, you'll have 19 hours to cash in on these 50-75% off games before they go back to full price.  Here's the list -

Battlefield 2: Complete Collection - $14.99 (50%)
Trackmania United Forever - $19.99 (50%)
Prince of Persia - $14.99 (50%)
Guild Wars Trilogy - $24.99 (50%)
EVE Online: Apocrypha - $4.99 (75%)
World of Goo - $4.99 (75%)
Lucidity - $2.49 (75%)

Personally, I highly recommend BF2, but most people have that already.  Trackmania's demo is a fantastic game, so I'll probably go for the United Forever full version.  Prince of Persia has had stellar reviews this year, and for those of you into indie games, I can confirm good things about World of Goo.

Have at it!

Modern Warfare 2: The Numbers

By Published November 10, 2009 at 11:49 am

Digital distributor Steam is required to play Modern Warfare 2. Steam shows the top 75 games being played, ranked by player count, and the numbers look grim.  The 6 year old FPS Counter-Strike: Source (which is online only) is beating out Modern Warfare 2's release day multiplayer numbers by 50,000 players.  If you were to add the Singleplayer + Multiplayer numbers together, you still fall ~17,000 short.  The message here is clear: PC gamers, especially those who enjoy the use of Steam, are spoiled by the ability to host and play on dedicated servers.  Being a platform owned and maintained by Valve, many of the gamers using it have played Valve games, all of which have dedicated server support.  Will the numbers sky-rocket in the next few days to surpass CSS and other old games, or will they stagnate and decrease rapidly after the first month of release?  You decide, we'll see who wins out within the next month.

Top 75 games by current player count

Current Players Peak Game
69,530 89,526 Counter-Strike: Source
59,071 70,652 Counter-Strike
33,271 33,271 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 SP
19,969 19,969 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 MP
