Our latest episode of Ask GN talks CPU IHS inclusion, delidding, RAM overclocking, some other tech questions, and a new trial GN shirt. We also talk about and demonstrate the audio quality differences between a Sennheiser MD46 and Sennheiser G3 lav kit, as some readers/viewers had inquired about our audio gear during CES.

The IHS discussion is an interesting one, and we’ll soon be demonstrating the cooling differences between delidded and lidded CPUs. Until then, though, we’re talking strength and the reasoning for an IHS to begin with.

This is our first episode of Ask GN since returning from CES, responsible for producing about two weeks’ worth of content that we’ve only just finished publishing. For this episode, we’re addressing questions pertaining primarily to reflowing / reballing dead components (laptops & GPUs), OEM vs. non-OEM CPUs, and a couple of airflow topics related to liquid cooling. Other questions include clarification on Kaby Lake & Skylake compatibilities, and keyboard USB passthrough impact on latency.

For our regulars, the usual accompaniment to Ask GN articles is a preview on what’s to come for the week. This week, we’ve got several CPU content items planned, a PC build, and lots of behind-the-scenes testing that will be published next week.

In this last episode of Ask GN for the year – number 39 – we open a holiday gift from NZXT, talk GeForce Elite & Red Team Plus, and dive into power supplies and their qualities.

The gift was a bit funny. NZXT undoubtedly saw our mostly positive S340 Elite review, but saw within said review that we made fun of the “puck” for VR and cable management. The team took it upon themselves to send us more pucks, along with a signed (from Johnny Hou, CEO) holiday card.

Cheeky bastards.

A bit of fun for the opening, then. After that, we talk about why quality power supplies are a good thing, and why it’s worth considering one. Typical nVidia and AMD discussions follow, including G-Sync and FreeSync physical differences.

We’re still cranking through content as we roll into the weekend’s holiday, and that’s not going to stop. We’ll be posting on the 25th, as we do each year, and I’ll likely be working on server upgrades. It’s somewhat of a Christmas tradition for GN, it seems.

But until that time, we’ve still got a solid week of production to cut through. This week starts off with the usual Ask GN episode, now #38, and will briefly highlight advantages of the Xeon or i7 CPUs in different use cases, frequency and core count discussion, and threats to Intel’s dominance in the computing world.

We’ll have a new PC build article going live within the next day, too. That’ll feature a few sales for Christmas, so be sure to check that guide. There’ll be a few fairly big ones.

In the midst of running another half-dozen thermal tests on upcoming liquid-cooled graphics benchmarks, we took a break from the (increasingly hot) test room for an Ask GN episode. Considering the video set is about 9-10C cooler than the test lab, it was a welcomed break.

This episode’s questions primarily focus on increasing SSD prices, game and driver optimization for GPUs, some brief computer history, and benchmarking. About half of the discussion somehow relates to game benchmarking or testing, with a few interesting tidbits from our previous computer history discussions.

Ask GN is a little bit more personable than our usual reporting, given the nature of the Q&A style of content. Taking that as an opportunity to update everyone on our server migration, we’ve finally moved; it was a success. The new server has been operational for a few days now, and it’s faster, more stable (seriously – 0 downtime, whereas the other began crashing every few hours), and will soon™ be home to an updated front-end for the website. We will be rolling-out small changes over the next few weeks, and those will eventually lead to a full refresh.

Anyway, Ask GN was the original topic. We’re on episode 36, and this week addresses questions of DirectX 12 scalability, GameWorks & GPUOpen efforts, electrostatic discharge and management of ESD, and more.

Leading into Black Friday and Cyber Monday, arguably America's most worshiped holidays, we're launching our next installment of Ask GN: Episode 35, which talks CPU socket technology, GPU silicon manufacturing (and what happens to failed chips), synthetic benchmarking and its variance, and super-sampled versus native resolution 4K gaming.

As we've expanded the Ask GN series, we've started advancing its collection and distribution of information. A few of the questions from this week's episode were passed through our contacts at AMD and nVidia, and next week is shaping up to hold similar Q&A as passed through manufacturing contacts. We're also working with some game developers to better answer a couple of CPU threading questions, as it seems a good opportunity for everyone to learn -- GN staff included.

This episode of Ask GN addresses reader and viewer questions relating to boost technologies for GPUs (DPM states and GPU Boost), "game mode" for monitors, and a couple questions related to CPU benchmarking. We talk loose plans for Zen tests and scalability of the 2500/2600K Sandy Bridge CPUs in the modern era. Even Nehalem got a few mentions.

Monitor "game modes" presented a topic with which we're not intimately familiar, but some research did grant us enough information to hopefully answer the question in a helpful fashion. The rest, like the boosting functionality on GPUs, is stuff that we've discussed on-and-off in review articles for several months -- it's just now laid-out in a quick Ask GN video.

Episode 33 of Ask GN answers a few more questions than we normally take, resulting in a 20-minute run-time for the episode. We talk about hyperthreading and its impact in some specific games, DirectX 12 performance, scaling of Dx11 and Dx12 performance on AMD and nVidia GPUs, Furmark, and a few more topics. One of those other topics was on recording software's impact on framerate, like Shadowplay, OBS, FRAPS, or GVR.

You can find the embedded Q&A video below. We've been running these for a bit more than a year now, making Ask GN our longest-running series by a longshot. As for content this week, because we often take Ask GN articles as an opportunity to discuss what's coming, keep an eye out for more EVGA VRM updates, BF1's performance with various RAM speeds, and a couple smaller items.

This episode of Ask GN sets forth to discuss GPU/CPU choke-points and bottlenecks, why those happen, and how they can be prevented. We also address viewer/reader questions on Samsung vs. Micron memory used in GTX 10 series cards -- particularly the 1070 cards -- and OEM/supply driven manufacturing.

Some additional information is provided regarding overclock validation, notebook OEMs, the Nintendo Switch, and some asides. One such side note addresses a question as to whether or not reviewing products "gets boring."
