How-To: Use Hamachi Virtual LAN as an Alternative to GameSpy
Tuesday, 20 May 2014With the death of GameSpy, and the announcement that a number of legacy titles are not going to be getting in-house support, it is necessary to see what other options there are to keep you in the game. This will touch on a few of the free options that are available.
In this quick guide to creating a virtual LAN for multiplayer gaming, you'll learn how to use Hamachi as an alternative to GameSpy and continue playing games.
Child of Light has excited me since its announcement not only because it’s developed by Ubisoft Motreal (Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, Far Cry), but also because it’s a departure from the action-oriented gameplay that most AAA publishers deliver. Creative Director Patrick Plourde and writer Jeffrey Yohalem, with whom I spoke at this year’s PAX East, have spearheaded an artistically-inspired Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) with Western elements, like platforming and item-crafting. For the most part, their JPRG rendition feels like a handcrafted, intimately-composed product that visually immerses its audience in an interactive storybook. The story sometimes comes across as fragmented from the gameplay, and customization depth feels limited, but overall, Child of Light offers a beautiful and well-composed adventure worthy of an entire playthrough.
In this Child of Light review, we'll talk impressions, story, artistic presentation, and the unique utilization of poetry as a central game design element.
Microsoft's Halo was a revolutionary title when it first shipped in 2001. Combat Evolved on the Xbox soon moved to the PC with a "Halo: Custom Edition" free expansion, adding new maps, flamethrowers, and other user-generated content tools. Halo 2's 2004 launch introduced the likes of dual-wielding, competitive online multiplayer, and broke global video game sales records within 24 hours of release.
GameSpy Death: EA Kills Battlefield Multiplayer Support Up Through BF 2142
After its 15-year run enabling multiplayer gaming online, GameSpy announced in April that it would be shutting down its servers for good. We've followed the story through now, noting that 2K Games would continue supporting Civilization and Borderlands with patches; Rockstar, Volition, and Bohemia followed with their own announcement of discontinued and supported games. EA has now voiced its thoughts on the matter, and things are a bit less promising.
EA Games stated that fewer than 1% of its total peak online players actively play legacy titles, and as such, they will invest no effort in revamping the online back-end. The Battlefield series, C&C series, and Crysis games will be deprecated without official support.
Enjoying the Death Throes of GameSpy? RockStar, Bohemia, & Volition Updates
There is some updated information on what games have solutions in place (or are getting closer to having something in place) to replace GameSpy's dying service. We'll continue to follow this to keep people up-to-date as companies announce their solutions. For our earlier coverage, check out the first article on GameSpy's death and the follow-up on Civilization and other games.
There are very few games that get me writhing with anticipation. Even fewer can ruin my work day by sending an email that there is a new update being released. Focusing on work rather than investigating what new changes have been made is an agony of indescribable horror and suffering. Swen Vincke and the team at Larian Studios just put me through that.
If you've had the misfortune of not hearing about Divinity: Original Sin before now, then accept my pity. We've previously reviewed Divinity's 3D RPG counterpart, Divinity II – The Dragon Knight Saga. And we liked it quite a bit.
But Original Sin is completely different from a mechanical angle.
2K Games Supporting Legacy GameSpy Titles: Civ, Borderlands Survive
In light of the upcoming termination of GameSpy on May 31, it's a pleasure to announce that some beloved titles (to me, at least) are going to keep going. 2K recently announced that they are working to migrate the following games to Steamworks from GameSpy:
PAX East 2014: Double Fine Teaches Hacking 101, Previews Kickstarter Project | Preview
Double Fine’s a perfect fit for the PAX shows because it strongly, actively supports its IPs in the community. This PAX was no different. Double Fine showcased a couple of new titles -- the upcoming Hack n’ Slash and the recently-launched Broken Age -- as well as the second title under its Double Fine Presents publishing moniker, Last Life. Gamers Nexus was on the scene to preview each of these.
PAX East: Titanfall Panel Recap – Customization, Expansion Packs, eSports, & More
Respawn Entertainment today hosted a Titanfall panel featuring CEO Vince Zampella and Lead Designer Justin Hendry, each working to deliver key information pertaining to the game's future objectives. Prior to PAX East, Respawn released their first title update for Titanfall on the XBOX One and PC. This patch included small changes as well as the first big change—something that the community was very interested in having—which was private matches.
