Gladiatorial Showmanship from STBomber vs. DonRaeGu at MLG Raleigh

Posted on August 28, 2011

"Wait – why is he scanning so much? Maybe Bomber thinks DonRaeGu has epilepsy and he’s trying to give him a seizure!” In typical commentator style, Tasteless’ words flowed with such rapidity that they nearly went right by the crowd, but in the peak of the joke, the entire spectator crowd erupted in laughter. STBomber found himself playing against DRG in an epic Terran vs. Zerg semi-final battle on the main stage, and knowing full well that he sat in the favored seat, decided to put on a show of proportions equivalent to the Roman coliseum gladiatorial combats.

Bomber turtled up as Terran, opting to go for a marine/marauder/medivac/ghost build (with nukes, our favorite!) against a very zergling/broodlord-heavy army from the increasingly distraught DRG. When the first major battle took place on screen, Bomber rained down a solid five to ten MULEs (from his plethora of Orbital Commands) in the middle of the battle. And yes, it was physically in between the two armies. While tanks and marines fought with unrivaled ferocity (although, perhaps they were rivaled by the agility of HuK’s female friend when interviews are requested), the MULEs slammed into the earth from above and waypointed to their respective mining locations.

Commentators spotted this and, at first sight, figured it had been a massive blunder and mis-clicked hotkeys; they took the “blunder” and ran with it, Tastosis saying: “I dunno, man, maybe he saw those Broodlords and decided, ‘hey, you know, MULEs come from the sky, maybe if I aim this just right I can hit a Broodlord on the head.’”

We quickly realized that this MULE drop was not a blunder, but rather a flourish of skill and mockery of DRG; this was proven when Bomber continued his flashy display and threw down a minimum of four scans in a single, stacked location (more still, on top of an area he had clear vision of) when winning a battle.

The crowd exploded with laughter when they had realized what happened, which soon blurred into “oooohs” when bomber followed with the rain of nukes and MULEs on a semi-saturated expansion of DRG’s.

DRG held his head in disgrace when the match was lost, and exited his booth in a hurry. The showmanship present is representative of why people come to MLG for e-sporting events, and we hope to see more in the future!
