GeForce LAN 6 Takes Gaming to the USS Hornet

Posted on September 20, 2011

NVIDIA's expanding quest to conquer the competitive gaming market has taken another step forward today with the announcement of the GeForce LAN 6: the biggest party in LAN gaming. NVIDIA has made it clear that the event will take place on a boat (seriously) with around-the-clock tournaments, contests, and an exhibit area with cool stuff (likely including the 3D Vision tech we reviewed earlier). They want to be on a boat, sleep on a boat, eat on a boat, flip burgers on a boat, and even duke it out playing videogames... on a boat. Who can really blame them?

GeForce LAN 6 is scheduled for Oct 14 – 16, 2011, and for all of you sailors at heart, it will be located on the Aircraft Carrier USS Hornet in Alameda, California. So, if you are around, why not stop by and say 'hi' and maybe sleep in one of the comfortable bunks aboard the Carrier. Registration for BYOC ('bring your own computer') will be open soon (check their official GeForce site for updates), and is stated to cost $80 for the following:

  • Access to GeForce LAN exhibits and USS Hornet museum all weekend during general admission hours
  • One seat and 3 feet wide of table space
  • ~4 amps of electrical
  • Friday night opening reception
  • Saturday and Sunday lunch
  • Saturday night dinner
  • Awesome swag bag
  • Entry into official contests and tournaments
  • Entry into official raffle
  • $5 will go toward Child’s Play charity, with 100% matched by the NVIDIA Foundation
  • Option to liveaboard the USS Hornet via the "LAN Camp" program option below (for additional fee; limited space available; see GeForce LAN FAQ for details)

If you're feeling wealthy and like a pro, you could consider the $110 BYOC 1337 package, which entails these extras:

  • All of the above, except larger table space (4 feet wide)
  • Priority load in line
  • $5 will go toward Child’s Play charity, with 100% matched by the NVIDIA Foundation

General admission only costs $20, so if you want to go hang out on the USS Hornet and experience the GeForce LAN exhibits, Hornet museum, and join a few of the contests and tournaments that are open for general admission, this is your package of choice.

Scheduled activities for GeForce LAN 6 will include the event kick-off on Friday, October 14 (at 6:00 PM), with registration and exhibits opening at 3:00 PM on Friday. Saturday will bring BYOC lunch and BYOC dinner events at 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM respectively; exhibits close at 8:00 PM on Saturday. Finally, Sunday's exhibits will open at 10:00 AM and close at 3:00 PM, which is when the event comes to a close altogether; another BYOC lunch will be held at 12:00 PM on Sunday.

Tournaments and prizes are still unannounced.

Online registration will start September 20, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. PDT so be ready to press those buttons quickly and sign-up for the LAN of your life, on a boat, with friends, and awesome NVIDIA reps.
