CyberPower Fangbook Edge Specs - GTX 970M, i7, & 4K LCD at $1800

Posted on October 7, 2014

NVidia's GTX 970M and 980M launched alongside several laptop SKUs today, including new products by MSI, Origin PC, CyberPower, and others. The first of our many laptop write-ups includes CyberPower's updated Fangbook, an i7-4870HQ-equipped unit hosting nVidia's new GTX 970M, 8GB of RAM, and a 4K screen for UHD gaming.

The Fangbook Edge ships in two versions, both equipped with the GTX 970M and both using a shell effectively identical to MSI's GS70 Stealth notebook – one of the skinniest gaming notebooks we've ever written about. The SKUs are differentiated only by the display; the Fangebook Edge Gaming Notebook uses a 1920x1080 15.6” display, whereas the Fangbook Edge 4K Gaming Notebook uses – as indicated by the name – a 3840x2160 15.6” display.

The 1080 Fangbook is priced at $1690. Opting for a 4K display increases the price by a little over $100, landing the unit at $1800. For comparison purposes, the Origin laptop we're posting about later today ships at around $1823 on a 1080 display, but has a few minor differences.

CyberPower's Edge uses a 15.6” form factor with a large bezel on the display – one of my only complaints – and is 0.78” thick (the same as Origin's unit – likely the same chassis supplier). The bezel size on all these notebooks is presently dictated by wireless antennae, which are housed at the top of the display and must be hidden by the bezel.

In terms of internals, we're looking at an Intel i7-4870HQ CPU clocked at 2.5GHz and turbo boosted to 3.7GHz. Intel's Iris Pro HD 5200 IGP can be found on the 4870HQ, which has historically made its mark in Macbook systems. In theory, the Iris Pro will drive graphics at a comparatively ultra-low TDP when a full graphics solution is unnecessary, falling back to allow the GTX 970M do its thing when gaming is prompted by the user.

I/O includes 3xUSB3.0 ports, an SD card slot, HDMI out, mini-DP and Thunderbolt 2, 2x3.5mm audio jacks, ethernet (RJ-45), MiraCast wireless display tech, and Intel's 7260 Wilkins Peak 2 wireless internal adapter. CyberPower notes that the unit can drive 3x1080 DP monitors.

A Sound Blaster Cinema 2 audio chipset powers the Fangbook's four speakers. The keyboard is fully-backlit, for those who like flashy things.
