GN Goes SSL - Part 1 of Many Site Updates

By Published September 14, 2017 at 7:18 pm

As recently mentioned in one of our site update articles, we have now successfully -- theoretically -- moved to SSL for The store page (which is a masked redirect to a SquareSpace page) should also be behind SSL, though we're still doing some troubleshooting on that. It's secure and behind a certificate, but it's a masked redirect, so might be some errors thrown about that.

Either way, there shouldn't be any issues with the change. The website is now forcing all internal HTTP links to HTTPS, moving us into the modern era for the site. Although not a big one, it's an exciting first step to a round of much-needed website and server upgrades for GN. There are still bugs with the site (comments, forums, registration, email), but we're working on those. If you encounter specific SSL-related bugs, please let us know via Twitter or comment.

Speaking of comments, that's one of the next major pushes. The comments, forums, and user accounts have been all kinds of buggy for years. There hasn't been much pressure to update and fix everything -- we're always buried in content production, and because we were still building a community and viewer/reader interest, it was more important to divert resources to production than to maintenance. Now that we're rolling smoothly in the former department, we can work on the latter. The plan is to make some back-end updates to the server, hopefully with some performance optimizations, and then move to work on fixing caching. The caching resolutions will help with the responsive template getting cached at times (and forcing the content left-aligned), and will also help with issues where comment replies don't always display properly without a cache clear on the server. We're getting there.

GN has been around for a decade, so there are lots of bandaid fixes in place. We're slowly working to update things.

Stay tuned for more. For today's content, check the below:

Some people seem to have missed the fact that the first segment was a joke, but to each their own.

Side note: Andrew will be out of town for a bit, so that means I'll be editing many of the videos for the next week. There'll probably be a change to editing style, but only briefly.

Cheers, all!

Steve started GamersNexus back when it was just a cool name, and now it's grown into an expansive website with an overwhelming amount of features. He recalls his first difficult decision with GN's direction: "I didn't know whether or not I wanted 'Gamers' to have a possessive apostrophe -- I mean, grammatically it should, but I didn't like it in the name. It was ugly. I also had people who were typing apostrophes into the address bar - sigh. It made sense to just leave it as 'Gamers.'"

First world problems, Steve. First world problems.
