2K Games Supporting Legacy GameSpy Titles: Civ, Borderlands Survive

By Published April 23, 2014 at 6:45 am

In light of the upcoming termination of GameSpy on May 31, it's a pleasure to announce that some beloved titles (to me, at least) are going to keep going. 2K recently announced that they are working to migrate the following games to Steamworks from GameSpy:

  • Borderlands
  • Civilization III
  • Civilization III: Conquests
  • Civilization III: Play the World
  • Civilization IV
  • Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword
  • Civilization IV: Colonization
  • Civilization IV: Warlords

They do acknowledge that this will be a bit of a difficult transition: "During the transition, players will experience interruption of several features, including online play, matchmaking, and VOIP." Though, lets face it, if you've ever tried playing Civ IV online, those problems already existed with GameSpy (still not bitter) though just with no hope of it ever ending. If you're looking for an alternative to GameSpy so you can continue playing multiplayer Civilization or Borderlands, it looks like there won't be any hacks or workarounds required beyond the official GameSpy removal patches.

It is a bit of a shame that they are not bringing over the Stronghold series and a few of their other titles. If this transition goes well it might help get some interest for more title conversion. This might also help other studios that aren't planning on doing anything, like Crytek, to follow suit with a viable option instead of just choosing to abandon their games' multiplayer sides.

In related news, the following 2K GameSpy titles are presently considered "discontinued" by the company:

  • Borderlands (PS3)
  • Civilization Revolution (PS3)
  • Close Combat First to Fight (PC / Mac)
  • Jetfighter (PC)
  • Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector (PC)
  • Leadfoot (PC)
  • Rune (PC)
  • Stronghold 2 (PC)
  • Stronghold Legends (PC)
  • Top Spin (PS2 / PC)
  • Top Spin 2 (PC / DS)
  • Vietcong (PC)
  • Vietcong Demo (PC)
  • Vietcong Fist Alpha (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 Demo (PC)
  • MLB Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution (DS)
  • Major League Baseball 2K9 Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • NHL 2K10 (Wii)
  • NBA 2K10 (Wii)

Crytek's discontinued GameSpy titles include:

  • Crysis (PC)
  • Crysis 2 (PC)

EA is working on solutions for:

  • Battlefield 2
  • Bad Company 2
  • Battlefield 2142

Keep your eyes on the front page as we follow GameSpy's death and the title transition. Thanks to reddit for some of this information.
