Evolve "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG" Crash with GTX 980 on 347.52 Drivers

Posted on February 10, 2015

While performing our updated Evolve benchmarks (beta graphics card benchmark here), we encountered a catastrophic driver failure explicitly when using the GTX 980.

After updating to the latest Evolve-ready nVidia drivers – 347.52 – we began benchmarking all available Maxwell and Kepler devices (GTX 960, 980, 770, etc.) in Evolve. The GTX 980 is capable of making it into the game's menu, but crashes immediately upon starting a match. The error is reported to the user as “DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG,” followed-up with an action center notification that the display driver (nVidia Windows Kernal Mode Driver 347.52) stopped responding.

We have not yet encountered this error with other nVidia devices, including:

  • GTX 750 Ti
  • GTX 770
  • GTX 780
  • GTX 960
  • GTX 980

For validation, we tested this driver with an ASUS GTX 980 (rather than our reference card) and found the same issues on our test platform.

It is possible that this issue is isolated to a specific hardware configuration, but it is also important to note that all of our test platforms are clean installations (imaged to an SSD) with zero previous driver installations to interfere. If other users are encountering this error, we encourage them to post configurations in the comments below to benefit those who've found this content.

There is not yet any known resolution for this issue. We have reached out to nVidia for comment.
