Nyko's PS3 Raven Controller: An Attempt at Ergonomics

Nyko has announced its new Raven controller for the PS3. The Raven claims to rest more comfortably in gamers' hands during play sessions, and having reviewed a number of ergonomically correct products in the past (perhaps in my effort to prolong the inevitable disability that comes with gaming), I had an interest in the Raven controller.

Aside from its Poe-like raven logo, the controller juts out on either side with grips shaped like a raven's beak. The Raven bears striking resemblance to the Xbox controllers (almost harkening back to the original!), which made us a little bit skeptical about its distribution of mass and overall grip. Allegedly the controller is made with ergonomics in mind - so those of you with wrist problems or 'joystick thumb' might want to consider the device.

The Raven is priced at a relatively standard $35 and claims to support upwards of twenty-five feet wireless play. It uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that gives up to twenty-five hours of gaming, although a wary note to users: as with laptops, you will want to completely drain the battery from time-to-time, otherwise you risk developing a memory (similar to the tried-and-died nickel-cadmium batteries, but less extreme).

Steve started GamersNexus back when it was just a cool name, and now it's grown into an expansive website with an overwhelming amount of features. He recalls his first difficult decision with GN's direction: "I didn't know whether or not I wanted 'Gamers' to have a possessive apostrophe -- I mean, grammatically it should, but I didn't like it in the name. It was ugly. I also had people who were typing apostrophes into the address bar - sigh. It made sense to just leave it as 'Gamers.'"

First world problems, Steve. First world problems.
